Vienna Airport Facts

Vienna

Vienna International Airport is located in Schwechat, 11 miles to the southeast of the city of Vienna, and is the busiest and largest airport in Austria, capable of handling wide-bodied jets such as the Airbus 340 and the Boeing 747. The airport serves as the hub for the national carrier Austrian Airlines and its subsidiaries.

The airport serves the city of Vienna and provides both a high number of domestic flights to Austrian destinations and international flights worldwide. Routes to the Middle East are becoming busier, and the low-cost airline sector is also improving. Twenty million passengers each year are served by the airport.

Vienna International Airport has two runways and three modern terminals, with the third providing services exclusively to low-cost carriers. The airport is becoming an East/West hub due to its increase in passenger numbers travelling to Eastern Europe. Several major international carriers use the airport, together with many budget carriers.

Passenger airlines which serve Vienna International Airport include British Airways, Lufthansa, Korean Air, Iberia, KLM, Finnair, Aer Lingus and Air France, plus more than 20 low-cost carriers. Destinations on international flights include major cities such as London, Moscow and Paris as well as Chisinau, (Moldavia), Baku, (Azerbaijan) and Podgorica, (Montenegro).

The most popular routes served by airlines using Vienna International Airport are to destinations in eastern Europe and the Middle East. Seasonal flights to tourist destinations account for a high number of bookings. All three of these sectors are expected to increase further in the near future.
